Backpack Guide

 

Time Frame: May 26 – August 7, 2010

Compensation: $180/week, plus room and board, limited sickness/accident insurance policy, workers compensation and laundry

Responsible To: Executive Camp Director

General Responsibility

To outfit, guide, lead and teach outdoor skills and backpacking techniques to youth on backpacking trips during the summer months. To share God’s beautiful mountain creation with others. Organize and assess the backpack gear and equipment, making necessary repairs. Package the food and equipment for the trips.

Minimum Qualifications

* Christian faith and lifestyle
* Training and experience in high country backpacking (8,000 to 13,000 ‘)
* Current CPR and Wilderness First Responder certifications
* Ability to work well with people outdoors
* Good decision making skills and ability
* Good character, integrity and adaptability
* Desire to spend days at a time hiking, and sleeping outdoors
* Ability to read a map, compass or GPS
* Good physical condition
* Knowledge of high altitude illness and blisters
* Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
* Must be 21 years of age or older

Specific Responsibilities

1. Assess the backpack gear before and after each trip. Do any cleaning and repairs as necessary.
2. Design menus for each trip; purchase food, and packaging of food.
3. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment to campers and youth leaders.
4. Be familiar with each trail before taking a group out.
5. Assemble a first aid kit, organize and re-supply the kit after each trip.
6. Guide each trip; observing all participants for safety; signs of hypothermia, high altitude illness.
7. Teach participants the use of stoves, and cooking procedures.
8. Be responsible for the welfare of each individual on the trip and do all possible to solve problems.
9. Help ensure morale and health of each individual by monitoring rest and diet.
10. Monitor the load carried by each individual, and redistribute weight as necessary.
11. Ensure that each individual conform to wilderness ethics (Leave No Trace) to include;
a. Proper burial of human waste;
b. Water taken from lakes and streams, but NO water or waste put back into streams or lakes.
c. All campfires completely extinguished..
d. Pack out all garbage.
e. Minimum impact to campsites.
f. No live plants or wood cut or harvested.
g. No fishing without a current Colorado fishing license.
h. Noise control when in the vicinity of other people.
i. No chasing or tormenting wildlife.
j. Do not shortcut trails.
k. Comply with USFS permit regulations.

Essential Functions
1. Must be able to hike 12 miles with a 50 pound backpack in one day.
2. Ability to communicate to campers and staff in safety regulations and emergency procedures.
3. Must be acclimatized to altitudes of up to 13,000 feet.
4. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
5. Cognitive and communication abilities to help plan and conduct a backpack trip.
6. Good decision making skills and abilities.
