Counselor/Program Support

One of the unique aspects of being a smaller camp is our Counselor/Program Support position. Many camps across the country struggle with staff burnout. It unfortunately happens. We’ve designed this position to prevent burnout, and to allow staff the opportunity to discover all aspects of camp ministry. The staff assigned to Program Support for the week are just as essential, if not more essential, than the up-front counseling staff.

This position involves being a counselor some weeks, and program support other weeks. Sonlight does not offer a full-time, 9-week counseling position. The Counselor/Program Support position will have both of the following job descriptions:
When the role is counseling, staff live with, and are responsible for, our amazing campers. Counselors must be prepared for long hours, minimal personal time, and many rewards. Counselors must enjoy young people and have a sense of fair and effective behavior management.
Other weeks, staff will be program support. This will involve behind the scenes duties, including dish washing, mowing lawns, leading teams course initiatives, and preparing program events. These weeks are valuable to practice the skills of supporting others, and to enjoy a slightly different pace at camp.
