Discovery Camp
4th, 5th and 6th Graders

The Sonlight Staff realize the unique challenges parents face when sending their young child to summer camp. Both camper and parents can feel anxious and nervous. Research shows that summer camp is a healthy experience for almost all children (campparents.org/valuecamp.php). From a warm greeting and smile as you arrive, to listening as your child recounts their favorite camp memories from the past week, we design our summer camps to be fun, enriching, innovative, and memorable. Our summer staff is fully trained in areas such as homesickness, bullying, behavior management, and safety. We want your child to have the best summer camp experience possible. Explore our website, and discover what Sonlight is all about.

Discovery Camp (resident camp) is for 4th, 5th or 6th graders. 6th Graders also have the option of Wilderness Week, a rustic wilderness experience in the National Forest focusing on leadership, community, and outdoor skills.

Sonlight offers (2) programs for students entering 4th-6th grade in the Fall of 2012:
Discovery Camp (4-6th graders): a traditional one-week resident camp
       Discovery Camp 1: June 17-23, 2012
       Discovery Camp 2: July 22-28, 2012
Wilderness Week for Boys/Girls: for 6-8th graders, introductions to leadership, community,          and  outdoor skills.
Wilderness Week for Boys: June 24-27, 2012
Wilderness Week for Girls: July 29- August 1, 2012

A quick look at Sonlight Christian Camp:

   10-day staff training program.
• An independent, non-profit youth camp celebrating 31 years. Sonlight is ACA-accredited.

Positive Expectations: Here at Sonlight, we believe...
• Each camper should be respected as a real person, with ideas, opinions, and unique value
• Camp is community: we care about how we treat others
• You should be safe inside too! We never allow teasing or bullying
• Each camper should be respected for the person they are right now, regardless of what has    happened in their life.

Parent’s Questions -

I’m nervous about my child’s first time at camp. What things do I need to know?
We understand it can sometimes be hard, deciding where and at what age, to send your child to summer camp. Here at Sonlight, we believe in the benefits of summer camp: emotional development, spiritual growth, safe interactions within a supporting community, etc. We also believe in having the very best counseling staff, who are hand-picked, and who undergo (10) days of training before our summer season. Lastly, we train extensively, and adjust our program, to make new campers feel safe, secure, and at home.

Still have more questions? Visit American Camp Association's www.campparents.org for advice, how to choose the right camp, the impact of summer camp on child development, and helpful information. We believe in the benefits of summer camp, we hope you will too!

Sonlight Christian Camp is an equal opporunity employer and service provider operating under special use permit on the San Juan National Forest.
