  What's New

August 27, 2009

Summer, fall or winter, the great thing about camp is that it's always an adventure. This morning we hosted all the school district employees at Sonlight for initiative games. And I do mean all. 207 of them. Transportation, teachers, principals, school board members, kitchen and custodial staff and the District Superintendent. 16 teams. Trust walk, hula hoops, the water-n-can, horizontal ladder, carabiners and string. It was a great morning, building teamwork and communication. We sent them off with cookies at noon, back to school to prepare for a great year for our community. Thanks all you school folks for everything you do for kids.

A great backpack trip with Austin Theological Seminary- click for photos. Karamie joined Winston and Mary for the trip, Karamie enjoyed a bit of cool weather since she now hails from New Orleans. (OK- so it was downright cold. Not much 'cool' about 32°).

Brett heads back home to Denver today- we'll miss having him at Sonlight. He'll definitely be back for the Fall Retreat in October. And of course summer 2010! Thanks Brett, for everything.

From a staff member:
" This summer both motivated me to do good work and helped me experience God and his love"

Brett is holding down the fort at camp while Winton and Mary continue their backpacking trip. This week he and Kate were joined by Brett's parents visiting from Oregon. They have had fun doing a little fishing and seeing some of the sights in the area. Below is a picture of the Rogers gang at the Balcony House at Mesa Verde National Park.

The end of summer brings a season of transition at Sonlight from the fast pace and fun (and noise) of the campers and summer staff to a time of rest and reflection. This summer we learned "It Matters." Now it's time to begin applying these things to our lives, but how?

Some things to think about (from Brett): "Why has God placed you here? Why are you on this earth? We need people who have taken the time to wrestle with the meaning of life, who want more than money, success, etc."

Search for God's will for your life. You can find it. And It Matters.

Summer 2009. It Matters. As summer wraps up -- II Timothy 3:14.

Winston, Mary and Benji are off on a backpack trip with seminary students from Austin Theological Seminary. Brett is holding down camp, wrapping up summer projects and enjoying his wife Kate, and his parents being at camp for a few days. Thanks to Mike C. for keeping up the 'What's New' page this week!

Last day of resident camp 2009. What a summer it has been. A core of committed staff. Hard work. Long days. Laughter. We don't always realize the value of what we do. Yet reading Facebook conversations, camp evaluations, e-mails from parents: we know that camp matters.

Links are up to the 2nd High School backpack trip- a few pics are posted here as well.

Lots 'o lumberjacking going on, we've got firewood for the winter. Link to Wilderness Week for girls photos is up. It's hard to believe that tomorrow is the last Friday of summer camp 2009. We're going thru the summer evaluations- and gleaning some good info. Thanks everybody who has sent them in. If you haven't we'd still like to gets yours back. A quote that made us smile:

“My favorite meal was: every one I ate with Liesl and Andrea.”

Wednesdays are great days. Wilderness Week for Girls comes off the trail today. Our guest group Friends of Florida college has a Wild West theme all day long. Ninja thistle patrol has made huge progress on the obliteration of thistles. Click below for the recent Sonlight newsletter, if one didn't arrive in your inbox.

We wrap up our summer Saturday night with a staff closing, sending our staff off to the next step of their journey. Some unknowns out there, but we do know it will always be an adventure.
