What's New

March 28, 2009

Thanks for the birthday wishes everybody. 3" new snow at camp- looks wintry again! Winston is working on his new project-- composting with red wrigglers. He's been feeding the worms kitchen scraps for a couple months. The worms are fat, and we have a bucket of compost for the flowers. We had an awesome week with Brett at camp. We're stoked for summer, the plans are amazing.

Thanks Winston for pics around camp. The pond is full, and except for a little ice and snow, it looks quite inviting to jump in. 12" new snow at Wolf Creek this past couple days.

Lord, in my heart I plan my course, but You determine my steps. (Proverbs 16:9). Life is not going as I planned. But I am so grateful that You are not caught off guard. You knew eerything that would befall me. So please direct my steps as you dtermine.

We love March- you think spring is here, and then it snows. We're grateful for the moisture. Good board meeting over the weekend, and delightful to have Heidi and JT stop by for an evening. Brett is here for the week, summer plans are moving along at breakneck speed.

Snowpack in the Colorado mountains is near normal levels, despite one of the driest Februaries ever. Snowpack in the valleys is way below normal. This photo of the Sangre de Cristos, east of Sonlight, was taken Tuesday. San Luis Valley is to the west, the Wetmore valley to the east. The mountain snowpack at Wolf Creek is normal, but we are dry at camp. Pray for rain! (Thanks John Winchester for the photo)

We love ski groups! Thanks Paul and Tim for the extra hands. Tim also straightened up computers for us, and gave us a hand re-laying ice room carpet.

Keep Dani and her family in your prayers. Dani's Dad, Steve, passed away on Monday. He will be missed.

Lent is the season before Easter, lasting 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In the 4th Century, Lent was started as a period of fasting and repentance in preparation for Easter. During this time, people often give up a particular food or habit, and set aside time to focus on the sacrifice Jesus made for us. His death and resurrection. I once heard a pastor talk about Easter, and how as Western Christians we skip through Lent, celebrate Palm Sunday, and then slide into Easter. Somehow we fail to ponder the darkness of this season, and the death of Jesus.

Lent is upon us, inviting us to dwell in the valley of the shadow of death, yet without fear, for the good shepherd is with us. If we remain open and receptive in the darkness of Lent, if we remember that growth most often occurs in darkness and in secret, if we let God teach us in that darkness, and if we surrender the darkness when it is time to embrace new life, we can more deeply experience Easter joy. We can rejoice, as always, that Christ has defeated death’s finality. And we can also rejoice that we have been brought from the valley of death’s shadow into the marvelous light of our resurrected Lord. (Kimberlee Ireton. Relevant Magazine)

More Michigan pics. Thanks Brett!

Brett was busy in Michigan! JennyMark sent along a few pics from the open house at the coffee shop. We're jazzed about all the ideas from Brett and Heather for next summer.

Snow in the air today- it's too warm to really stick, but the prediction is for a few inches overnight. It looks like winter again. Junior Camp is really filling up, so don't delay if you have a young one who wants to come to camp. New devo up!

Lots of activity in the Sonlight office. Winston and Mary just returned from a camp conference. We enjoyed seeing our camping friends, and learned a few things as well. Brett heads to Michigan this weekend for some planning with Heather and Nick, our head guy/girl counselors for summer 2009. He'll be meeting up with some folks interested in staff positions, and do some recruiting as well.
